This game was SO FUN
I loved the gameplay transitions, the music went so well with the battling, and the art style went so good with all the asset design.
I was sweating at low hp while running away but that made it so much fun, especially with the music. My favorite jam entry so far :>
Thank you so very much! I won't stop singing praises about Savestate's wonderful tracks, he absolutely nailed the vibe I was going for-- I'm glad you liked it too! And I'm happy to hear you felt the invigoration I did when getting the escape sequence rolling-- I can't wait to develop more dungeons with longer paths and timers so the escape really gets its chance to shine!
Thanks for playing!
Ahh, thank you for your kind words! I pride myself on trying to match the vibe and feel of that era in a good deal of my projects, so your praise is taken joyfully!
Thank you for playing!
This is by far my favorite entry in this jam.
Gameplay: Very fun. The control is smooth. The map, with the enemies, is fun to navigate around and battle. The objective is clear even without direct text.(something I have plenty o' troubles with) The boss pattern is a bit simple for my taste, but given it's the first boss, it probably better like this. Also the gameplay switching reminds me of blaster master, I like that.
Graphics: Excellent. Very good readability. The player design looks so nice I kinda want to see a character sheet. Not very fond of how some enemies are basic shapes, but what do I know.
Audio: I'm not very keen about audio, so let's just say everything sounds good, both sfx and music.
NES Feel: Perfect, I don't even know what I can say. Accidentally think I was playing on an emulator for a sec.
20/20, hope you develop it to a full game
Ask and ye shall receive-- here's Andromeda's character concepts I threw together at the very very start of the jam!
Thank you for such an in-depth review, I really appreciate it, and thank you for playing my game!
Nice game
Very cool game and awesome way to combine genres. I had fun playing.
Incredibly strong execution here! I had a ton of fun and didn't see the transition coming after finishing the SHMUP portion of the game. I loved the graphics and audio y'all put together, too. Thanks for making and sharing your game!
Thank you so much, I'm so glad the genre-swap has been so well received! And thank you for your kind words, we worked very hard to make it look, sound, and feel as accurate as possible within the time limit!
Thanks for playing!
Guardian Legend is my favorite NES game so I was pleasantly surprised after the shmup stage ^^
That rocks, good choice! It's a classic that doesn't get talked about enough-- I'm glad you made the connection, heheh.
Thank you for playing!
The music, art, gameplay, and everything are very well done. Great work, excellent game!
Thank you so much!!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it, thank you for playing!
This is a fantastic entry, I loved it. When it opened I was so thankful that someone had done a space shooter a la Astro Warrior, and I was super impressed when it switched over to a Zelda-style top-down. Having been conditioned by Zelda, I went around this game pushing all of the fixed blocks on the floor to see if any would reveal a staircase or something. (Even now, I'm thinking, "but did I push *all* of them?" ). Great music, great art, very smooth mechanics. I only wish that it was perhaps a bit harder, so as to give some of that old NES game frustration, and more importantly, to keep me playing this game longer. Awesome!
Thank you! I'm grateful you enjoyed it so much!
It's funny, I had considered the same thing when designing the stages and even had the thought a few times-- "this is gonna confuse the OG Zelda players like me..." hahaha! I assure you there aren't any secrets hidden in this build of AoZ, but that won't stop me from trying to get a few tucked away in the future! And I'm so glad you like presentation-- props to Savestate, his tracks turned out perfect for what I needed!
I definitely wanted to make it harder, though my focus was ensuring everything would be seen-- much like the potential for secrets, any future builds will definitely ramp up the difficulty.
Thanks for playing my game!
Thank you so much for taking the time to play and comment! You rule. I did the music and it was great working with Corvus
Summary: A very solid job and fun way of combining two different styles of gaming while making it feel like they belong together. Well done!
Notes:
Thank you, I'm glad you appreciate the genre-mash!
I do strongly urge a gamepad for play-- I set up keyboard controls this way as most of my comrades prefer WASD for movement, and I've experienced too many issues in the past with keyboards not being able to take more than around three "letter" inputs at a time, while other "system" keys don't count towards this limit. The arrow keys seemed a decent stand-in for J, K, (etc. etc.) and upon testing for HTML export, some keys would not register at all in-browser, so some rearranging was done to ensure all inputs would be read and still feel relatively comfortable with left-hand controlling movement.
I truly apologize the keyboard layout wasn't to your liking, I am aware it's rather unorthodox.
For me, if the keys are not second nature, that makes it more difficult to play. It's all part of the package of being old and ornery. Nothing against you, one bit!
I love how dynamic this game is, combining the dungeon and the space field into one seamless experience. As a massive Zelda fan, I appreciated the dungeon a lot. It has a creative puzzle set with the power crystals opening other doors. I also felt like the attacks were well balanced. The music was very catchy!
I did the music. Thank you so much for the kind words and for taking the time to comment!
Hahahah, I'm glad I got a fellow Zelda fan's approval! Glad to hear you thought things were balanced, I tried to keep things on the easier side without holding your hand... it's not a hard game, but you have to play it if you wanna win, heh.
And yeah, Savestate absolutely killed it with the soundtrack! My favorite track is definitely the boss fight!
I don't know if there were supposed to be any (health) pickups, it's quite possibly the only thing that felt missing, because everything else is solid.
Aha! I knew someone would notice/mention eventually, haha!
That's the one and only thing I didn't get implemented in time... glad to hear you enjoyed it, regardless!
My biggest complaint is that I want more, and if that's my biggest complaint, you did real good. Great game!
Thank you so much! I wrote out enough design points when putting it together that it might be enough for a full game... after the jam I'll need a break, but I'm definitely planning to add to/polish this one further.
Thanks for playing!
Do it, I'm making my entry from last year a full game and it's been a blast. Although it's almost unrecognizable from the original version. Expect things to change a lot as you go deeper into development. And if you do make this a full thing, I'll be happy to give feedback along the way. :)
I can already see the changes I'd make, I imagine there are even more that I can't predict that'll come to pass, hahah.
Feedback will always be welcome, I appreciate it!
I just need more honestly
Haha, may the heavens will it true-- you'll probably get your wish. I plan to expand a bit more on the game once I've recovered a bit. There's a lot I had in mind for potential mechanics and items that I ended up cutting due to the time constraints of the jam.
I'm glad you enjoyed it, thanks for playing!
This is amazing, everything is top notch. I'd love to play some more stages
Aha, thank you so much! I'm glad you think so, I have plenty of ideas in mind to keep things fresh, so hopefully before long I'll get to continue working on it!
Thanks for playing!
Solid entry. 5/5 experience, there is just one thing I would add, that enemies would bounce out a little bit after getting hit by the sword, but its just like minor thing, for me
Thank you for your feedback! I absolutely agree, a little enemy knockback would go a long way-- especially against my little blue-sawblade guys, yeah? Haha.
Thanks for playing!
Totally cool Zelda/shmup thing. I like how it subverted my expectations changing environments. Graphics and sound were very nicely done, the flickery transparent sprites were a nice touch.
Haha, I'm glad you appreciated the switch-up! Snd thank you, I worked very hard on the graphics and making sure they were readable.
Thanks for playing!
I completed the game.
The presentation is top notch, the nes asthetics and soundtracks are perfectly nailed, the controls feel great and the speed are perfect in both parts, the dungeon is good, the visual feedback are also quite satisfying and so is the boss fight.
I thought this game could have been slightly harder.
Great game!
Thank you for playing! I'm so glad you enjoyed it, and appreciate your words on the gameplay and visuals!
As far as the difficulty goes, it sounds to me like you were my original vision's intended audience, haha. This game was going to be much harder, but I opted for a more casual romp for the jam specifically to ensure the entire experience could be enjoyed by all.
Once I've got the time to continue working, future versions will be a more difficult to complete.
Dude, this rules! If Konami had published it in 1988, we would all remember it as one of their best.
This short size is just right for a game jam, but you really ought to do a more involved take later. So many ways you could go with this.
Straight 5/5s, easy!
My goodness, thank you so much! I took lots of inspiration from Gradius, Salamander, and Contra for getting the aesthetics down, so having my little game equated to a Konami release is probably some of the highest praise I could ever wish for!
I'm so happy to hear you and many others all want more from it, I'm definitely planning to expand on it once the jam wraps up and I've gotten some rest.
Thank you so much for playing!
This one is really awesome. Feels like it is inspired by The Guardian Legend with the mix of shmup with a topdown action game. Everything fits the NES style accurately.
You're spot on! The gameplay was inspired by The Guardian Legend, Hal Labs' Air Fortress, and Blaster Master.
I'm so glad you like it, thank you for playing!
