I began playing as if spellbound by the 90s visual novel UI style, with statues standing on either side. Though I didn't fully grasp why Her treated me that way in that scene, the sheer spectacle alone felt overwhelming. Did I disappoint Her? Despite the short playtime, when only Her's ankle remained in the deteriorating illustration at the end, accompanied by the title screen's ECG-like chiptune music, I felt a profound sense of loss even without understanding the story. Thank you for letting me experience this awful feeling. (not blame!)
Thanks a ton for playing!! Glad it was still enjoyable even if it might not have been the clearest for you.
Loved the PC-98 frame around the game. Beautiful work, and really disturbing horror in that one scene. Love a deluded unreliable narrator, it all really worked well together. The menu was also a highlight.
Thank you!!
really amazing aesthetics & UI, and thematically i love the contrast between the grand religious imagery and the clearly modern backgrounds! the beeping sfx at the end merging back to the (very good) main menu theme was an incredible moment. i know both characters aren't really meant to speak but i felt like i really wanted to hear more of their voices than just a few words!
great job & looking forward to more!!
Thank you so much!! I’m glad you liked it!
That was even darker than I expected. What a beautiful-looking game you made in a week. The retro aesthetic, her sprite portrait, and how she appeared in the CGs were gorgeous. This jam might have had one of the strongest sound designs for me. The footsteps, the long pauses, they really make the experience a lot stronger as a whole. It is a short VN with a story that I think is quite impressive for a game jam.
As for the story itself, I feel like I do understand what was going on, but I was not as emotionally connected as I could have been. It is very hard to build that up in 10 to 15 minutes, though. What I did get from the story left a sinking feeling in my chest, which is more than likely what you intended.
Thank you for playing!!
I’m glad you think the sound design sticks out, as I made each one with the idea that since there isn’t really any branching paths present in ANGELFACE to really immerse a reader, having good sound design would be a good way to do that without having to write anything extra to the narrative.
If there was one thing I think I could’ve done better, it was maybe humanizing ‘her’ a little more. In the end though, I think I still managed to do quite alright with the time I had.
The story was fantastic, and had a pretty good build up. I especially loved the bits near the end where the text started getting more frantic and jumping off the text box. It really sold the ending for me. If I was to critique anything, I would suggest lowering the volume of the writing bits slightly, but that's a very minor critique. Great job!
Thank you!! Yeah, I’ve gotten a couple suggestions regarding the text/speech boops being a little grating, so I’ll definitely have that taken care of in a post-jam update, among a couple other things.
I’m happy to hear you enjoyed ANGELFACE regardless!
I am yet again blown away with what people have done with Ren'Py in the jams I have attended. I absolutely love the style and aesthetic you achieved. Beautiful work, and I don't like visual novels, regardless, my eyes are being opened to the truth. I want to bring attention to your character design, it's very nice. The shape language you conveyed in her silhouette is excellent. The story is captivating and genuinely had me uneasy. It was painfully obvious some freaky shit was goin on but holy crap that climax was incredibly executed. Again, spectacular implementation of Ren'Py.
Wonderful jo-- ok wtf lmao I was paused just after the spooky scene typing this and the game got a shader error and like visually crashed my browsers (all of them) for a sec. Super freaky, no damage done, and likely unintended. Honestly it just means bonus points wtf.
Thanks a ton for checking it out!! Super happy to hear that you still liked it even if VNs aren’t your thing, that means a lot.
As for the shader error —yeah that’s definitely not intended lol, but we can totally just pretend it was and call it meta
Great little enjoyable VN! The aesthetic is great, the pixel art, and the 16-bit sound effects. The story is simple but still enjoyable.
Thank you so much! Glad you enjoyed it.
It was difficult for me to click the "Start" button in the main menu. When I heard the music and saw the visual, I knew I was going to have a great time. The game has a great aesthetic. The combination of music and visual style is amazing. I was satisfied with the storyline. I look forward to your next projects!
P.S. In the future, I would like the game's interface to be slightly larger.
Thank you!
In a post-jam update, I'll probably update the GUI to make it look less like it was made in a week and to (hopefully) accommodate those playing in windowed mode.
I appreciate the feedback!
I loved this. From the second I heard the main menu music, to the second that same music started to loop again after the final scene. God I hate how much I actually love this, of course, meant with all the admiration and awe.
Thank you so much for playing!!
It felt heavy and tense from the start, as everyone said here, the style of UI and pixel art you made are great and gave os much to the whole story. I liked how it was slowly building up... well done! :)
Very pretty game! I love the artwork a lot, and as other people have pointed out, the PC-98 look is very cool! I will, however, give one nitpick, that being that the noise that plays when scrolling through text is very grating and hurts the ears. I'd probably lower the pitch on it by a little bit. I feel like the story also landed a little flat to me, mainly due to how linear it was, and it felt like a lot of the dialogue, even knowing the context of the ending, didn't really serve any purpose. I think a second pass would go a long way in punching up the story, but given the one-week timeframe, I think you were still able to make a pretty good game! Good stuff overall, and I look forward to any future work that you do!
Thank you for checking it out!! I appreciate the feedback.
Man, was that heavy. Great work on the UI! I especially liked the sprite art and pixel art! The SFX also deserves a massive shout out. Wow–without being too in your face, the story is depicted is beautifully subtle.
I can only speculate it as a story about domestic abuse–of some sort? I had a feeling the woman wasn’t an angel but the horrifying end was just like pouring a bucket of ice cold water over me.
I say, push it even further, you have a knack for creating unnerving stories! Keep it up! ^^
Thank you!!
Regarding your speculation, I wanted ANGELFACE to be a story in which you can still gather further details through subtext (whether it be characterization or setting) in subsequent reads that might not have stuck out on the first. Do with that information what you will.
In any case, I'm super glad you enjoyed it!!
Excellent. I'm a sucker for anything with a tasteful pc98/denpa aesthetic, and you've nailed it here. Very nice that you did visual/audio bits that were actually shown, instead of being solely in the text. Silence from a VN character has never been so palpably heavy. The story creeped me out from the start, and never let up. Loved every bit of it.
Thanks a lot!! When I was designing the UI, I just knew I had to incorporate some of that PC 98 feel in some way. I'm glad it turned out great.
This was incredibly well done! The visuals are beautiful and every part from the design to the sound fits so well!
Thank you so much!!
The visual style you created was gripping, and the music was complementary. Very impressive work, with all the hallmarks and usual QoL that VNs have. Good job!
Thank you!!
I happened to find this game. The cover art looked beautiful so I gave it a try. The first thing that impressed me was the UI. It’s both pretty and creepy at the same time.
The story is just as good. At first I thought we were performing some kind of ritual and that the woman might be a demon, but by the end the story flipped into something else. I’m not sure if I understood it correctly, but I think we’re the ones who kill her and then dispose of the body. It really shocked me.
If possible, please try my game and give it a rating. Thank you very much.
Thank you! Super glad you enjoyed it, and I checked your game out -- I left a more detailed review there, but I enjoyed it!
Pixel art and sound are soo good, the only thing comparable to me to this in terms of sound is World of Horror but I think this does it better and has a complete story. Genuinely creepy and had tense moments like she is yelling stop, job well done.
Thank you so much!! World of Horror was actually one of the inspirations for ANGELFACE, as I had initially wanted it to be in a one-bit style. I couldn't really pull it off super consistently, though.
I loved the story, the pixel art was also very good.
Thank you!!
Well-written. Disturbing. Good sound and graphics (although a few more images wouldn't hurt).
A part of me had hoped that there would be decision points in the gameplay to influence the outcome, but I understand that wasn't your vision.
Thank you!
While I was coming up with ideas for the story's presentation, I initially waved around the idea of wanting 'her' to speak and have choices present. I ultimately decided against it, though, as I thought it'd fit with the themes better if neither were in the game.
