The animations here are done with code, by deforming image_angle to rotate body parts and image_xscale and image_yscale to add squash and stretch. This way even when the pixelart deforms it still retains same resolution, making it look smoother than pixel-perfect would.

Yeah very much inspired by skeletal animation, as I've used that in many of my projects.
