This will be likely very long, so please excuse this absolute behemoth of a wall of text while I try to put my thoughts down cohesively. (I just checked and it's 1.6k words I AM SO SORRY) First of all, the sprite art is super cute, has nice colours, lovely expressions and generally follows the theme well. While it is noticable that the backgrounds were not hand drawn, a good job was done of adjusting the lighting to the sprites, and I generally enjoyed the choices for music, sounds, UI and the likes, as it all sold the aesthetic of the game well.
Now, storywise, I would consider myself not a fan of how the dynamic was written, but I'd like to explain why and give some feedback for how this could've worked better. Mind that this is all my own, super subjective opinion after too many years of reading works in this genre and essentially having seen all tropes under the sun for MLM pairings by now. The fact that one is compelled to give feedback is because I sincerely thought the gameplay was very pleasant otherwise and would've loved for the writing to underline that more effectively. I truly did like the day being sectioned into various times, with choices leading one down various surpisingly different paths. It all worked smoothly and had no bugs, which is great for a game jam game! So, much praise to you for deliviring such a finished work under heavy time constraints.
Spoiler warning for anything beyond this point!
Firstly, I'd advise you to explain in the content warnings that Cyrus and Mikael met when Mikael was still a child, because I personally would've rather avoided the work for that reason already. I am not a fan of when people write such tropes, only to then make the younger one of the dynamic come onto the older one when they are adults as some sort of flawed subversion. Displaying that they are both matured as adults and equals mentally is more important, I believe, to somehow sell this trope better, if it feels necessary to keep.
I am also not certain if the abuse towards Cyrus is not supposed to be sexual, but it does seem implied to be with the way Mikael's father was invading his space, touching his thigh and the likes, saying quite unsavory things towards him, so if that was the intent, I'd highly suggest you also tag that in the content warnings. Because again, I would've not played this game if I had been aware of the implications there, and if that is read correctly by me, it would make Mikael's actions a lot worse.
Generally, Mikael is my main criticism of this game. Because although the theme is Toxic Love, I had assumed since the kiss would need to be mutual, many people would also make the love in general mutual and not create extreme imbalances. Especially since you have written yourself into a sort of difficult situation by already having a strong power imbalance due to the master and servant relationship, it does not help that Mikael is, to me personally, not very likeable. Knowing that Cyrus has been abused heavily by Mikael's father, and Mikael follows suit to constantly flirt with Cyrus, making outlandish requests of him, basically acting like a creep when Cyrus shows nothing but rejection feels a bit tiring. I think if Cyrus had been more willing to give into Mikael and show his inner turmoil between having feelings for the man and wanting to kill him due to his own trauma, this would feel a lot more satisfying! It's important to build up Cyrus' love just like Mikael's, if not more since he is the protagonist. Because you have a compelling idea right in your hands, a servant tormented by his past master, his new master acting similarly to the past master unintentionally, but out of totally different intentions and genuine adoration brought across clumsily.
If Cyrus was actually somewhat respected properly by Mikael and not constantly forced into situations, I think I would've not been as frustrated playing through the routes. I thought perhaps, it would get better, maybe Mikael would learn to see Cyrus as more than a servant or an object to possess, but the bad ending was especially uncomfortable, with Mikael literally just talking exactly like his father, even calling Cyrus 'doll' like his father did, making me root for Cyrus to actually just succeed in killing him. Because no romantic feelings had been implied yet from Cyrus' end, and Mikael was just being horrible in his one sided love. Mikael acts like some kind of mastermind, when he would've been much more charming as a bratty aristocrat overeager about his affections and blind to his own position, treating people awfully but showcasing to Cyrus that he cares still, rather than him playing into the fact he owns Cyrus, that he's his, emphasizing how he sees him as nothing but a servant and completely disregarding his wants by saying he can do with him what he pleases? Of course, it's a trope I'm well familiar with, but personally do not enjoy being perpetuated so much.
You can absolutely make a commentary about how abuse can become generational and how to break the cycle, but it did not seem as though you wanted to make something beyond a silly, fun game. And that is valid! But sprinkling in heavy subjects without being mindful ends up feeling like this work is speaking lightly of such abuse. I don't like to think of what would happen after the bad ending had concluded, as the implication of Mikael forcing himself on Cyrus (potentially sexually?) left me a little ill to be honest, as that was the same point where their intimacy had been implied in the good ending.
And the good ending felt not much better, because it only reminded me of the bad ending, even if this time things were more mutual. The emphasis on how much Cyrus knew Mikael as a child also really did not help their dynamic feel more balanced, since the implication that he may even still see Mikael as one is not exactly ideal. I think I would've enjoyed the more lighthearted toxicity of Cyrus being out for blood and wanting to murder Mikael, while the latter is simply amused and enjoying the attention, even playing into the role of a tyrannical master rather comedically, much more if it weren't for Cyrus being genuinely miserable and festering so much disdain.
He'd been so mistreated and essentially Stockholm Syndrome'd into caring for all he was left with even after so much pain and suffering, and he literally has nobody else, that I just wanted him to be free and live a good life. If it had been made more clear how much Cyrus actually loves Mikael the whole time and how torn apart he is over being unable to separate Mikael from his father, as well as emphasizing how Mikael really is not like him or trying to improve, again, this could've been super compelling! But it doesn't exactly bode well for Mikael to still call Cyrus 'doll' again, the term that's already associated with Cyrus' abuser calling him that. Perhaps if he asked him to, maybe it'd be more like reclaiming it? But it did not feel as such, when he specifically tells him not to call him that. And then Mikael still feels to need to be all 'you belong to me!!!' as if they didn't just have a mutual exchange and there is no need for trying to act possessive as if they aren't literally isolated from most of society.
Overall, I'm deeply sorry if this review feels overly negative, because I think you have the skill to keep making good games in the future and are showcasing a lot of lovely things in this work. However, I think I would've been able to appreciate your dedication to this entry much more if it weren't for my perceived mishandling of the thematics. You are free to fully disagree, and I believe it is a good thing that I resonated with Cyrus to a degree, as it is a positive display of your ability to write good characters, however I think there's still a lot to be thought on in the future about how to handle various topics and wether to potentially skip out on them for more lighthearted games, or even go into a more serious direction instead.
You absolutely can make Mikael the most awful man on the whole planet, but it'd feel much nicer if Cyrus was actually on board with that and not constantly wanting to get out of this situation. Even his final confession, at least when telling the truth, feels almost somber, and Mikael doesn't seem to comprehend what kind of part he's had in Cyrus' mental decline. The audacity of Mikael to act as if Cyrus was in the wrong in the bad ending and somehow didn't deserve to be treated well, as if Mikael hadn't been absolutely awful, genuinely made me need a break after the game before I could finish playing the other routes. And I don't believe your intention was for Mikael to be dislikeable, so I'd gently request reflection on his character, and what you envision for him, if you want to make more works with him and Cyrus in the future. My sincerest thanks for your attention thus far, and I hope you are able to rest well after your hard work on this entry, as well as enjoy the remaining rest of your day or night.
