You have to go a little further back. Through the rounded thingy that looks like a thruster. . On the left side there is a square typre of opening. You can steer Rooter in there and he will dig through the trash and get you the pole. Also took me a while to figure it out. Even the walkthrough is not very intuitive! ;-)
