The rulebook is a bit barren, about 3 art pieces in total, a hard to read font and lots and lots of tables. There are some minor mistakes like a line beginning with "units have 4 traits" and then listing 6 traits. All the terms are generic which fits the universal theme, the system itself reeks of warhammer but is also generic. It does assume the reader has some familiarity with wargames which makes it read faster. It is also definitely a skirmish game as each model is their own actor, there are no groups or squads and even the weakest unit has 3 hitpoints.
So why buy this? I could just go grab my old Death Guard book instead. Well true to it's name it is rather universal. The player must assemble their own units by combining traits. So you can simulate the most crazy scenarios. Peasant army versus a terminator? Check. alien mercenaries versus religious zealots? Check. Angels versus demons? Check. The actual list of content isn’t the longest, the book is only 70 pages and about half of those are for multiple types of traits. But the traits are build up in a way that makes it really easy to come up with your own.
If you’re a creative type like me or have a really weird collection of miniatures TUSC could be fun. If I ever play a game with it I’ll be sure to post the battle report here.
