I have exactly one complaint: missed opportunity to use @ as the player action as an homage to early ASCII rpgs (Angband, Rogue, (Net)Hack)

I am not familiar to those games

(1 edit)

Think the earliest versions of computer RPGs. If you ever hear the term "Rogue-like" its referring to the same Rogue game I mentioned. They were top down maps with ASCII characters (keyboard symbols) used for graphics. In all of them, the symbol for the player characters was @

This is actually a great idea, the @ is a staple in the nethacks and rogues of yore and still is nowadays.

Edit: But I understand why > is better than @, way easier to write it down when going full analog with pen & paper. Better than writing @ dozens of time.

Fair! > is a much easier to write symbol. And i only really caught it myself when I transitioned to a typewriter that doesnt have > and I had to find a replacement. Stared at the available symbols until I realized @ was perfect
