Fair! > is a much easier to write symbol. And i only really caught it myself when I transitioned to a typewriter that doesnt have > and I had to find a replacement. Stared at the available symbols until I realized @ was perfect

Think the earliest versions of computer RPGs. If you ever hear the term "Rogue-like" its referring to the same Rogue game I mentioned. They were top down maps with ASCII characters (keyboard symbols) used for graphics. In all of them, the symbol for the player characters was @
