What a cool game concept! I love how you can choose the answers through collecting orbs, that's very creative. The controls fell very smooth and satisfying. The man on the monitors feels very eerie with their design which works very well for a horror game about experimentation. I did find the little alien squid very cute though, I like them a lot. The style of the game is also very pretty!
Very cool game!
Thank you! I'm glad you've liked the game :)
This game feels very complete for a jam game and after taking a small look at your profile, it doesn't surprise me at all that this isn't your first game, one of the first impressions I got when looking at the game page is that this project came from someone who has made games before. The controls feel smooth and responsive, the charge time isn't to long, when I mess something up or go in a direction I didn't completely intend to go I blame myself instead of the game (which is good). I do think the models inside the tank like the squid, could have used some more detail since everything else in the background looks really detailed, the aesthetics all together are really appealing though and the TV guy is really creepy with his two frames a second eyes and mouth. Overall, a really well put together product, great work!
Thank you for the comment!
I'm glad you found the character movement satisfying, this was one of my priorities, and I'm glad it worked out.
I absolutely agree that the squid and the 'fish' look a bit out of place. They were kinda made out of the simplest shapes, and I had no time to polish them and improve their visual style. Maybe something I could come back to later.
Holy that monitor face is way too creepy
And this game really captures the feeling of being an experiment animal
kinda feel sad now
But this game one of the unique in the game jam
Great job guys :)
Hey, thanks for the encouraging comment!
I'm sorry for making you sad, but I'm glad that my game had an impression on you.
Cool game, I really enjoy playing as the cute squid ^^
Though I didn’t quite understand what to do after collecting the three virus particles.
Thanks for keeping the navigation in the intermediate settings window - it really helped me!
Thank you for the comment!
After collecting three particles, you should submit them to the scientist as your answer to your question. You can do it by holding and releasing the right mouse button. The game as it is now, does not communicate this clearly to the player, so this is my bad. It would be really cool if you gave it another try, because there is a lot more to be seen!
But in any case, I'm glad you've played my game and found the squid cute
Interesting concept, the game made me feel small and insignificant, being a tiny squid-like creature trapped in an experiment. The idea of being tested on was unsettling, especially knowing that the man behind the TV might decide my fate.
Thanks for the comment! It feels weird to say, but I'm glad that you've felt this way, because this was my intent :)
Anyway, I'm happy you've found this concept interesting!
The idea of the aquarium is quite unique. It was fun to play the game. You have a very quirky style, in a good way. I enjoyed it!
Thank you for the comment! I'm happy that you've liked my game
Really strange but unique game! I really dig it! At first I thought we were supposed to shoot the little orbs but then I realised it was our way of communication.
Thank you disembodied television face-man, I’m glad my meagre actions amused you! I feel like there is an underlying message here about playing god or something but I did enjoy the mechanics, very relaxing and I would to be reincarnated as a squid in my next life! ^^
Squids are the best!
As a disembodied television face-man, I thank you back for playing my game! I'm glad that you enjoyed amusing me :)
Bold move. Willing to limit gameplay to convey a different message. It’s interesting that you’re an alien and yet feel alienated by humanoid televisions. But why a squid?
Good question! No good answer, though. I thought of it back when I was developing a tabletop prototype for this game, something about squid's jet movement felt very interesting to me, maybe because adapting it to gameplay provides player with small tactical choices each time they move (fast but short bursts vs. slow but long bursts).
Anyway, thank you for the review!
really unique premise within the horror aesthetic! i'm reminded of a rudimentary form of the game "chants of sennaar", where you learn unknown languages using context clues and interactions with native speakers — in that sense there's so much potential for growth. congrats on an amazing submission !!
Thank you for the comment! I love Chants of Sennaar, so happy you've found my game similar to it! I didn't think about it, but yes, there is some common ground, since both games are about understanding and trying to establish dialog.
I'm glad I came across your game. There is this TV series where they bring in specimens from space, and uknown to them, a few of the specimens are extremely intelligent, so they break out and take control.
It must a horrific feeling to know that you're not at the top of the foodchain.
It indeed is a horrific feeling! And also it is truly horrible to be left to the whim of somebody who doubts your capacity to feel and reflect on the world, which is exactly the situation that I was trying to convey.
Thank youo for the comment and the reference, do you, by chance, know the title of the TV series you've mentioned?
Alien: Earth by Noah Hawley. I saw it on Hulu.
What a clever and creative idea! The feel of the controls is also very nice and fitting for a squid-like alien. I especially appreciated the smooth motion of the tentacles, very nice touch! The human face conveyed with tv screens is also very smart and is what encouraged me to try the game, so good job on that. The gameplay is extremely simple but manages to convey some emotions, so I think overall you did a very cool job! :)
Thank you for the comment!
I'm glad the creepy face got your attention, it was one of the funniest things to do in this project, so I am very glad that people are finding resonance with it. And nailing that smooth motion took a lot of work, but thanks to the comments like yours, I understand that it was totally worth it
Great game, I love being experimented on - reminded me of the AVP game where you play as a xenomorph in a lab!
Thank you for the comment and for the reference too! I'll have to go check this scene out now, you got me curious!
There were a few bugs, but they seemed to occur only in the web version, so I played the downloaded one instead.
The controls are simple, and the difficulty level provides just the right amount of challenge — that alone made it enjoyable.
But what left the biggest impression on me was the human face in the background!
How should I put it... it sits right on the edge of the uncanny valley, and it gave me chills — in a good way!
Since the player is human, it’s interesting how the human face itself ends up feeling frightening, which actually made me empathize more with the alien creature.
It was a really clever idea!
Wow, thank you for the detailed feedback!
So cool that you've liked the scientist, creating it was an enjoyable and interesting challenge, and I am very satisfied with how it all worked out in the end. Your interpretation is spot on, this kind of reverse empathizing was my intention for the game. I like the idea of thinking about the game as a kind of dialogue between the player and its author, and this game was an attempt to realize this concept as a procedural metaphor. I'm really glad that it worked out well!
Cool game with a really unique setting!
The feeling of being watched was conveyed well and the way the eyes on the monitor twitched freaked me out for sure! Oo
Enabling full screen didn’t work in the web-build, did you enable the “resizable window” option in the player settings?
Thanks, I'm glad you liked the game! I had great fun animating and scripting the scientist's "face", so I'm very glad you found it spooky :)
I had a few reports about the web version not working properly or crashing, so I've temporarily removed it till I fix the problem. You can still download and play Windows version, though.
This is quite the clever idea!
I really like that the red orbs will try to go into you so the specimen cannot answer randomly and actually answer the questions , really cool detail!
The sound of picking up biotes could have been a bit more crunchy, and there was a delay when you would touch the green ones which made it a little less juicy and impactful.
Also at first I tought I was supose to eat the green biotes and get bigger by clicking space (I did not see the controls on the main menu). Maybe some explenation in the game instead of the main menu would have made the game much more clear.
Also sometimes id only pickup one green when I touch multiple at the same time?
I am curious of the topology/3D model of the green biote since it still lags the game quite a bit on the windows version?
There is ceirently some kind of eldritch horror about being a concious being and a higher power doing lab experiments on you, yet I think the game could have done alot more with this, make the questions more phylosphical, existance/consciousness based and interesting.
But for a jam game, this is really cool and creative!
You should also play and rate my game roughneck, it will change your life and you will get 1 milion dollars in 2 weeks!
Play and rate to affirm 1 milion dollars in 2 weeks!
Oh my, a whole million dollars in just two weeks! Off I go to play your game!
But first, thank you for the detailed review. Especially for noticing some of the rough edges of interspecies interaction. I already see many ways in which I could have made it feel juicier.
I have a suspicion that green biotes are laggy because of their procedurally animated tentacles and also because they have several particle effects attached to them to create their sort of amorphous and bubbly texture. I should probably look into it and try making them less polygon-intensive.
You are spot on to notice that there could have been much more done with the creepy dialog. I had a lot of ideas, but time was ticking, and in the end I had to go only with the most basic ones. In any case, I was interested in making the scientist's answer sound like interpretations of the player's actions, and that both grounded my imagination, but also limited it. I was also very focused on making the movement mechanic feel right, and thus had less time and energy on developing the story.
Anyway, thank you again for the review! Off I go to get my million!
GO GET THAT BAG. (Remember, no refunds though)
The particle system is probably responsible for the lag, unity handles particles really poorly when they are close to the camera and especially when there are alot on the screen, graphic processing, nvida, something something...
PS. someone said that the screens in the background do not match with the aquarium and look out of place and I tottaly disagree (then again, art is subjective, but just wanted to let you know that I personally quite like it)
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into it! Maybe tuning the particles for these green boys a bit would help with the performance.
I'm happy that you find the screens on the backround cool, they were very fun to work at and are one of my favorite things in the game.
I'm a sucker for anything underwater and this for sure scratched that itch.
I thought the core movement was neat, although having both the main control things being holding mouse buttons felt a tad odd.
And I will note it did randomly crash on web and I swapped to download to play the rest..
But all around, neat game.
Thank you for the comment! Glad I was able to satisfy your underwater-loving itch :)
I tried to minimize the controls for the game and make them more accessible, thus the decision to wire all of the main actions to the mouse. Hopefully, it still felt intuitive, even if it was a bit unusual.
Unfortunately, the web version is unstable due to a lack of optimization on my part, so sorry for the inconvenience there. I'm glad you were interested enough to download and play it anyway, and enjoyed the ride :)
Sorry to hear about your web build there..
I wish to note, I'm not saying they were bad, and good on you making it accessible.
It's just saying that holding down both mouse buttons down awhile at the same time feels weird.
I like the meditative atmosphere, made of cute water sounds and physics, seaweed, and juicy green fishes. Red ones - no, they always scary me away. Even though I knew that they arre not dangerous. And of course this strange abusive scientist on screens - he looks like a crazy scientist from old movies (Poor Things, Frankenstein, others) or games (he reminds me of Glados for example). The way he expresses himself makes me feel uncertain and anxious. I would never be happy to meet him.
But I would happy to spend a bit more time in this alien role, searching a way to out, resolving puzzles, and exploring this creepy character <3
Hey, you should've used the screen idea in a scarier game! The screen idea is awesome, but there's too much contrast between the aquarium graphics and the screens! Good luck! You should think about how to use this in your next projects.
Thank you for the comment and suggestions! You're right, there is a mismatch between the screens and the aquarium, although I kinda like it that way, to be honest. I totally agree, though, that I could have made the game more scary and squeezed a bit more from the shock value of the face-screens. Definitely something to think about in my future projects.
I LOVE THE SCREENS. Its a cool gameplay loop but the ATMOSPHERE sells it. Can't wait to see where you take it from here!
Thanks! I'm glad you liked the atmosphere; this was definitely the thing I worked the hardest on (maybe sometimes to the detriment of other aspects of the game, haha).
I've just fixed the bug that prevented the story from moving forward, so now you can play it all the way to the end and discover how the experiment has ended!
Really like this, even with the breaking bugs, that squid is the cutest thing and moves and sounds great. Also that face in the screens is freaky af.
Thank you for your nice words, I'm glad you liked my little squid alien cute and my huge, ugly face scary :)
I had a feeling you'd say it was yours!
